In sub-Saharan Africa, women and adolescent girls miss an average of 84 days of schooling and work due to period poverty.
They face daily problems such as sexual violence, child marriage, teenage pregnancy, period shaming, abuse, domestic violence, and, last but not least, period poverty.
The goal of Africa Born in My Heart is to alleviate period poverty and provide theoretical and practical education:
- Body awareness
- Fertility awareness
- Making reusable sanitary pads
- Breaking taboos: educating men too

About the Africa Born in My Heart Association:
The Africa Born in My Heart Association is a civil organization founded as a grassroots initiative, focusing on international relief and development.
The association's goal is to implement projects through its humanitarian development and relief activities primarily in Uganda – and over time in more and more African countries – that contribute to improving the living conditions of disadvantaged small communities – especially women and children within them – and that provide the necessary conditions for increasing their lifespan and quality of life, including education, healthcare, orphan care, agricultural activities promoting food security, income-generating vocational activities, and vocational training. The projects are always created and carried out with the intention of imparting knowledge aimed at self-sufficiency and self-reliance.
We believe that everything must be done to reduce and ultimately eliminate gender inequalities. We believe that women play a key role in every community, so if we improve their situation, the situation of the entire community will improve.
In Manafwa, most adult women either never went to school or had to drop out at a very young age. Our program for women has both a theoretical and a practical part.
Theoretical: hygiene education, conscious family planning, natural contraception, basic economic knowledge.
Practical: they learn things that both help their daily lives around the house and provide them with income-generating opportunities. For example: making handicrafts marketable both domestically and internationally, vocational training (primarily tailoring), other services (e.g., hairdressing)
A further goal of our women's programs is for children to have an example, to see that learning is also valued by parents, that they do homework, educate themselves, and practice at home. The respect for women within the community grows, and their self-confidence and self-belief increase.
